Mini Cooper S Clubman Performance
The front-wheel-drive 2008 Mini Cooper S Clubman is propelled by a
1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that generates 172
horsepower and 177 pound-feet of torque. Flooring the throttle
activates a brief "overboost" function good for 192 lb-ft. Our test car
was equipped with the optional six-speed automatic transmission. We
recorded a 0-60-mph sprint of 7.2 seconds — expect manual-shift cars to
shave a few tenths off that time. The regular Cooper S is quicker, but
not by much.
Pontiac Vibe GT Function
Everything from the Vibe's stereo to its HVAC system features
controls that are within reach and obviously placed. Chances are, most
won't need to crack the owner's manual to get things up and running.
We also appreciate the Vibe's spaciousness. The wagon shines when
it comes to cabin room. Headroom, especially, is plentiful relative to
others in its class, and rear legroom is adequate; these two factors
make the Vibe an adequate choice for those faced with the challenge of
child safety seat installation. With 20.1 cubic feet of luggage
capacity on tap, the Vibe is near the top of its class when it comes to
cargo room, easily accommodating a standard-size suitcase. The wagon's
60/40 fold-flat rear seats are a cinch to deploy, should you need more
room for storing longer cargo.

Saab 9-3 Turbo X Sport Combi: Performance
Under the hood of both Turbo X and Aero models resides a GM-sourced
2.8-liter V6 turbocharged to produce 280 horsepower and 295 pound-feet
of torque that shows up mostly in the midrange. While the engine is on
the quiet side, the droning exhaust gets tiresome, particularly since
it's louder at lower rpm. Saab estimates the sedan version with a
six-speed manual will go from zero to 60 mph in 5.7 seconds, but we
clocked the Sport Combi wagon at a much less impressive 7.4 seconds.
Perhaps our test car's six-speed automatic transmission had something
to do with that. Shifts in full-auto mode are far from smooth, while
using the steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters produces gearchanges
that are inconsistent in responsiveness and generally slow.
Mazda MAZDA5 Function
Families with a child who still requires a car seat will find it
easy to install in the second-row captain's chairs, but Mazda loses
points for not offering a bench seat with the center seating position
for maximum safety. Kids who are tall and heavy enough to use a booster
seat (and can get themselves in place on their own) but haven't had a
massive growth spurt yet are the perfect passengers for this compact
minivan.
